Can you please make the Cyber Monday sale available for the download only versions
Best regards
Bjorn
Discount code doesn't seem to work on signed copies of Lighting in Layers DVD
@Robert-
Hmm. Just tried it and it worked fine. Price doesn't change at the item, but is reflected in the total at bottom. Maybe that is it?
-D
Yup, working now. Before it actually gave me an error message. Thx David! Great deal!
@Bjorn-
Sorry, DVDs only today. Perhaps next time?
Too bad Adorama charges $43 shipping to Europe... :-(
@Unk-
Indeed they do, which is completely beyond my control. Sorry.
Thank you! I've only recently discovered your blog and am working away through Lighting 102 now (should I still tag the exercises?) I've been eyeing the Lighting in Layers set wistfully, but the normal price kind of makes my teeth hurt. Problem solved!
@Pogue-
Glad to be of service. And definitely tag your 102's. Helps others who come along after you.
As someone who already owns Lighting In Layers, here is some unsolicited feedback:
Awesome. I've been reading this site for 4+ years I still can't believe how much I got out of the videos. I've watched them more than 10 times, and each time I swear I learn something (else) new.
So, either I'm a slow learner or there was a lot of thought put into the making of these DVDs. Or both.
Sweet deal! I had these on my Christmas list anyway!
Thanks DH!!
@Unknown & DH: I just ordered them to Austria. In product details it said »international free shipping« but during order process there was no way how to get free shipping. So I picked the cheapest one ($ 38) and added a note asking for international free shipping even if it would be slower. Half an hour later I had an email from the nice folks at Mpex confirming I had now free shipping. Might be worth talking to them about France, too!
@DH: Thanks so much for making the discs affordable to a student! Looking forward to watching them!

Ordered Strobist and Lighting in Layers (signed). $108 shipped! I feel like I stole something!
No need for the Strobist DVD. I was there in the front row. :)
Hi David.
I illegally downloaded and watched "Lighting in Layers" a few months ago.
Today seems like a perfect day to visit http://bit.ly/strobistkarma :D
It cuts the middleman, it saves 40$ for shipping costs to Europe and it leaves more room on my shelves.
Finally, it gives something back for your hard work and very insightful lesson.
Thanks a lot for "doing the right thing",
Eric
Perfect timing, thanks a ton for doing this.
I'm with Bjorn, I'd love to see the digital versions on sale. I'm trying to get rid of all of my physical media. Still this is a great offer.
Thanks David. I enjoyed your flash bus tour in Buffalo last year. Looking forward to watching Lighting in Layers now. A signed copy is on its way to me :o)
@Eric-
Thank you very much. You have renewed my faith in humanity.
@Dr.-
FWIW, the LIL DVDs come with a digital version—CD-ROM of everything, ready to drag to iTunes or whatever.
@Unknown-
Thank you!
@dpaton-
That was you? In front? I thought that was you!
I'm in London, UK & just ordered Lighting in Layers DVDs from MPEX. As @Mommsen suggested, I added a written note requesting their free shipping option. Got an email a little later saying they'd updated my order to use USPS free shipping.
Just ordered my Lighting in Layers DVD, thank you for the deal!
Your blog is what turned me into a photo addict. You have an amazing talent to share your passion.
Thanks a lot!
Thank you, David! As American living in Europe, I tend to gloss over the Thanksgiving thing, but with $100 off of some DVDs I've had my eyes on, I'm feeling pretty festive.
I attended the Indianapolis seminar. Just ordered Lighting in Layers. Thanks!
Davd - I am based in Australia and tried ordering through Gulf Photo as you suggested on your description page for the DVD. The discount code does not seem to work on that website.
Shipping to Australia will cost me another $50 and I'm trying to avoid that. Will you extend the coupon code to Gulf Photo too please?
@Wilson-
I cannot extend the deal to GPP (and didn't point there) but fear not: MPEX has said they are honoring free shipping for LIL, including international. Very cool of them.
Thing is, it's a hack. You have to choose the cheapest method then leave a note in the comment box that says you were unable to find the free shipping. Clumsy, but if you read the comments above they will verify.
Note, I do NOT think the other discs (Strobist Seminar) is free shipping.
Best,
DH
Thanks for clearing that up David -I clicked on the link for the full description of the DVDs and saw that to order from Australia at reduced shipping rates, I had to go to Gulf Photo.
Again, thanks for clearing it up and keep doing the great work you're doing.
I tried to buy Lighting in Layers but now they say that my credit card is from an unsuported country. I made in the past other transaction with them and have no problem. Is any way that this could be fixed? Thanks
Just picked up Lighting in Layers. I've been shooting for 30 years and since discovering your blog about 2 years ago, my photography has literally been transformed. A spark in me was rekindled and I can't wait to see what I'll learn from the DVDs.
Just tried to order a dvd set using the promotional code and it says the code is not valid. It is still Monday in the Midwest so I am not sure why it didn't work. Any ideas? Bummed about this.
just tried to buy a couple of these DVD's and the code isn't working. I think maybe b/c it's 9:33 pm pacific time? disappointing...
Well, I guess I'm a bit too late. I was able to get the Flash Bus DVD's, but MPE wouldn't take the discount code for the Lighting In Layers DVD's (I guess because it's 12:45am). Oh well, one set for $50 is pretty awesome! I can't wait to watch you and Joe do your thing! Keep up the great work, and Happy Holidays, David! Thanks for the great sale!
David,
Either I entered the code wrong, or the deal ended on east coast time. If so, bummer in Alaska, I think I mist the deal. I was pretty excited when I saw the deal. I've been a reader for two years, keep the awesome comming!
-Matt
Gutted that I may have missed it. Just got off a long haul flight and caught up with the blogs and tried doing it and LIL is back to $149 and the discount doesn't work any more. :(
Anyone wanting to learn lighting has a great opertunity here. I hav followed strobist for some time, purchased Davids first dvd set and Joes books. I attended The Flash Bus Tour in St Louis and purchased Davids and Joes dvds from the workshop. If you have a basic understanding about what your strobe settings do, you will learn much from the dvds. They do not share what settings to use in a situation, but will share how to work light and color to create shape, depth and detail by changing and moving the light as well as using light modifiers. No formula shared here. Just how to experiment and quickly find and tweek all your light sources. If lighting scares you, you will find these teaching aids a way to find freedom from that fear. I am a hobbiest and mainly shoot natural history and hav found it benefiting much also. I paid full price for these and would do it again. You are getting a bargan. You ill learn a lot.
"MPEX has said they are honoring free shipping for LIL, including international. Very cool of them."
erm.. there wasn't an option for free shipping. I choose the cheapest one at $38 as well. Did i miss something?
@Fatboy-
If you ordered LIL, shoot them an email with your order number and they will honor it.
@All who may have missed it, sorry but the discount code ended midnight EST.
Another happy vote of thanks, I just ordered lighting in layers - I'm in the UK and after confusing myself with shipping options, the mpex twitter/email guys confirmed that they'd remove it. Great service so far from mpex :-)
What a great idea, David! This on day special allowed me to finally purchase Lighting in Layers, and I'm happily looking forward to watching and learning. I bet this also enabled a lot of other readers to switch from "too expensive" to "too good to pass up!"
You've once again spread a little more light out into the world. Thanks for all that you do!
I have brought you origional seminar dvd's and seen Joe in London. Was excited to see this sale for the Flash Bus tour, but what is with Adorama charging $60 delivery for a DVD to Australia ?? This must be costing you sales and encouraging torrent theft.
Just my 2 cents....with $60 delivery fee to your door :P
@Steve-
I hear you. I have no control over what Adorama charges for int'l shipping. Although I gotta say, $60 for such a small item sounds a bit "profit center" to me.
But FWIW, that is one of the reasons we have always offered an instant download version.
I just purchased the Bus Tour video and did not receive the discounted price and it charged shipping. I used the link you posted and have been charged full price. My order number is A2012120116235456161 can you somehow help me get the DVD at the price you suggested?
@Unknown-
Hmm. There was never free shipping on the Cyber Monday deal for the Flash Bus video as it was done through Adorama. But you should have still received the discount price as that is in effect until they are gone.
Mt best contact at Adorama is Jeff Snyder, at jsnyder@adorama.com. I am sure he can help you.
Will try contacting Jeff. Thanks for your help David. Either way I am excited to get video and I'm sure it's worth full price if that's how this rolls
Peace, Ramsey
Hi david,
Is lighting in layers sill available to purchase ?
Thanks
@Ruliyanto-
Yes, either in hard copy or via instant download. more info on the main page:
http://strobist.blogspot.com/2011/01/introducing-strobist-lighting-in-layers.html
Thanks for the link,
I've just finished downloading the .zip file.
